DWTA on Avoiding Windshield Fogging

The Detroit Windshield Technicians Association (DWTA) has shared to car owners helpful ways to de-fog the windshield and car windows. DWTA President Peter Kinley says windshield fog is not just annoying, it can also be a safety hazard. “It is crucial that every vehicle owner is aware on how to effectively de fog the windscreen especially during the winter season. And for this reason we are publishing in our official website some effective ways to remove and minimize fog during the winter months,” Kinley enthuses.

The DWTA says there are simple ways to de-fog, and there are household items that can help avoid this.

US News has shared an article on defrosting and defogging windshields for driving safety. In their write-up they mentioned several steps that can ensure a fog-free driving during snow season.

“Clearing a foggy windshield up isn’t as simple as turning on the defroster. Keeping your window clear in the winter is all about balancing the warmth and moisture inside your car with the cold, dry air on the outside. Too much moisture, and your cabin will reach the “dew point,” which leads to fog on the window. Until your inside is dry, your glass will remain fogged—a dangerous proposition for you and the drivers around you.”

Removing the Fog

NBC News also mentioned an effective way to erase fog from the windshield and car windows. In the same article they also mentioned effective ways to de-ice a windshield. “Keep an old-fashioned chalkboard eraser on hand to quickly wipe away the fog. Prevent cloudy windows in the first place by using the defrost setting to blow warm air across the windshield as soon as you get in. You should also turn off the recirculation feature, so you're bringing in dry air and not just moving around moist air. If you desperately need to see out, shut off the heat completely and crack some windows — this is the fastest way to clear fog but will also leave you chilly.”

Avoiding Fog Build Up

Insurance provider State Farm meanwhile came up with tips to avoid fog build up inside vehicles. In the same write-up they furnished step by step instructions to prevent or erase fog from the autoglass. Safe Windshields

“Sometimes your visibility can be hampered from inside the car. Always keep the air vent set to 'fresh' rather than 'recirculate,' which can contribute to foggy windows. Your vehicle's defroster can help reduce the problem, as can opening your windows slightly. For best results, use your air conditioner. Air conditioners are designed to remove moisture from the air, and they can do that job even when the heater is on. Finally, keep a clean microfiber cloth in the car to clear stubborn foggy spots.” The continuation of this detailed guide can be found here.

The Detroit-based windshield technician’s association underscores that windshield fogging may be annoying but there are ways to prevent or erase it.
